Local News in Brief : Police Academy Study

Share

The Los Angeles City Council’s Finance and Revenue Committee recommended Tuesday that a $30,000 environmental impact report be ordered for the proposed expansion and renovation of the Los Angeles Police Academy in Elysian Park. The report would examine how the controversial, $24-million plan to construct classroom buildings, a parking garage, a cafeteria and gymnasium at the academy’s site near Dodger Stadium would affect surrounding parkland.

The study, which must be approved by the full council, would also examine the possibility of moving the academy.

Police officials have long complained that the training facilities are antiquated and crowded. But park preservationists and some nearby homeowners argue that the academy brings unwanted traffic and the noise of target practice to the park.
