Marks & Spencer, a major British retailer, said it has cut off talks with Campeau Corp. about possible cooperation in a U.S. venture. On Monday, Marks & Spencer acknowledged that the companies had been engaged in discussions "to see whether Marks & Spencer's intentions of entering the U.S. retailing market could be achieved by some form of cooperation with the Campeau organization." At the time, it said it had no intention of participating in a bid for Federated Department Stores, for which Campeau, a Toronto real estate developer, has launched a $4.2-billion offer. In California, Federated owns Bullock's and Ralphs Grocery.
