Michael Fay of New Zealand rejected a compromise offer from the San Diego defenders of the America’s Cup, calling the proposed 1990 multinational race in San Diego “nothing more than an ultimatum.”
In its compromise offer, Sail America, which had been detoured by Fay’s court challenge in its plans for a 1991 regatta, called for a race in two years in single-hull boats off San Diego with challengers from all nations.
Fay’s rejection of the offer means the race will be held in September in an unannounced location with New Zealand as the only challenger.
