Actress Jill Ireland told a Senate committee that had it not been for a mammogram that detected her breast cancer, she would not be alive to show her support for a bill to expand Medicare to cover the X-ray procedure. “My tumor was not detectable by examination,” the actress told the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee. “It took a mammogram to save my life. If all women knew about the benefits of screening, and if it were available to them, so many women could be spared surgery, painful treatment and death.” Breast cancer strikes one out of every 10 w1869440366among women, said Sen Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), the bill’s sponsor.
