Reagan Still Trusts Meese

WASHINGTON — The White House said today that President Reagan still has confidence in Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III amid reports that he failed to disclose a memo that called for bribing a top Israeli official to win support for an Iraqi pipeline project.
“The President has full confidence in Ed Meese,” White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater told reporters. Independent Counsel James McKay has been investigating Meese’s affairs, and The Times reported today that his inquiry now focuses on the memo from attorney E. Robert Wallach to Meese in which the alleged payoff plan was discussed.
