Women’s Basketball Roundup : USC, UCLA Lose in State of Washington

The Washington women’s basketball team remained undefeated in Pacific 10 play by defeating USC, 82-80, Thurdsay night at Seattle.

The Huskies (14-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference) trailed, 44-39, at halftime but were ahead, 82-76, before Cherie Nelson hit two baskets for USC to make it close at the end.

The Trojans, who got 31 points from Nelson, are 11-4 and 5-1.

Lisa Oriard led Washington with 22 points.

Washington State 53, UCLA 52--Penny Bowden scored on a driving layup with 17 seconds left to give the Cougar women a Pac-10 victory over the Bruins at Pullman, Wash.

UCLA’s Sandra Van Embricqs then missed two shots, a five-footer in the lane and a follow that rolled off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

UCLA’s Dora Dome was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points. Angie Weir and Julie Reynvaan each had 13 for Washington State.

The Cougars are 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference, while UCLA fell to 11-7 and 4-2.

The Bruins will meet Washington at Seattle, while the Cougars will play host to USC Saturday night.

Cal State Long Beach 106, Pacific 52--Penny Toler made 15 of 18 shots and scored 31 points to lead the 49er women to a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory at Long Beach.

Cheryl Dowell had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Long Beach (9-5, 6-0).
