NHL Roundup : Devils Give New Coach Schoenfeld a Win in His Debut

John MacLean’s third goal of the game broke a third-period tie and the New Jersey Devils downed the Pittsburgh Penguins, 6-3, to snap a five-game losing streak Thursday night at East Rutherford, N.J., in Jim Schoenfeld’s debut as the Devils’ coach.

Schoenfeld took over Tuesday after Doug Carpenter was fired.

Aaron Broten added a goal and three assists to help hand Pittsburgh its third straight defeat after four consecutive victories.

MacLean, who scored his first career hat trick, broke a 3-3 tie 38 seconds into the third period with his 11th goal of the season, beating Pittsburgh goalie Gilles Meloche.

New York Rangers 5, Philadelphia 2--John Vanbiesbrouck made 35 saves as the Rangers turned back the Flyers at Philadelphia.

Philadelphia goaltender Ron Hextall left the game after the second period with an injury to his right shoulder. He was taken to a hospital for X-rays. Hextall was hurt early in the second period when he was struck by a Ranger shot.

Boston 3, Quebec 0--Goaltender Reggie Lemelin recorded his third shutout of the season as the Bruins defeated the Nordiques at Boston.

Lemelin faced only 19 Quebec shots in registering his ninth career shutout.

St. Louis 9, Minnesota 1--Doug Gilmour had three goals and an assist as the Blues overwhelmed the North Stars at St. Louis to take sole possession of second place in the Norris Division.
