A Hollywood film maker was arrested Friday on federal obscenity charges for allegedly mailing explicit sex catalogues and videotapes depicting bestiality and sadomasochistic sex acts.

Gary Jerome Levinson, 38, was arrested by federal agents on an indictment that had been issued Thursday. The indictment, unsealed Friday, charges Levinson with three counts of mailing “obscene, lewd, lascivious, indecent, filthy and vile matter.”

Levinson, also known as Lee Vinson, was charged last month by city prosecutors with a misdemeanor violation of California obscenity laws for mailing obscene films.

The federal indictment alleges that Levinson, doing business as Fischer Publications, violated federal law by mailing an advertising brochure entitled “The World’s Most Explicit SEX Catalogue!” and obscene films to an undercover agent at a Sierra Madre post office box in November.
