Deteriorating Southland Beaches and the Victims of the Storm
I read “What Made Victims of Storm So Vulnerable?” (Part I, Jan. 20) and deduced from that article that residents of the beach area simply have no business living there. Not only is it dangerous because sooner or later nature will prevail and unleash its destructive fury, but because the beach and its adjacent area belong to everyone.
The residents of communities like Laguna Beach, Redondo and Malibu, especially those living directly on the shore, are actively keeping others off beaches they consider their own. This is simply not right. The authorities should never have permitted direct beach areas to be built on. Anything to the west of Pacific Coast Highway should be free of any habitations and should rightfully be returned to the people of California to enjoy.
