USIU Scores Hockey Win

Brent Mowery had 2 goals and 2 assists to lead the United States International University hockey team to a 5-4 win over St. Mary’s College (Winona, Minn.), Friday night at the San Diego Ice Arena.

Matt Shaw put the Gulls (15-11) ahead, 5-3, with a goal at the 14:37 mark of the third period. St. Mary’s got a goal at the 19:25 mark for the final score.

USIU, which has won six straight, outshot St. Mary’s, 46-16. St. Mary’s goaltender Mark Staub had 41 saves. Brad Wiley had 2 goals and an assist for St. Mary’s (11-5-1).

Dave Nash and Gary Woolford also scored for USIU. The teams meet again tonight at 7:30 at the San Diego Ice Arena.

TENNIS

San Diego State defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 6-3, Friday at SDSU. The Aztecs’ top player, Sondra Mitchell, and No. 3 Kristin Hill each won their singles matches for SDSU, which won 4 of 6 singles and 2 of 3 doubles. It was the first dual match of the season for SDSU.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Mark Warren scored 28 points and Gerald Duncan added 22 as Cal State San Bernardino easily beat UC San Diego, 89-64, at San Bernardino.

After trading the lead for the first 10 minutes, San Bernardino pulled to a 44-32 lead at the half and was never challenged. San Bernardino (15-4), which is ranked fifth in the west among NCAA Division III schools, outrebounded UCSD, 40-26.

Kevin Stewart led UCSD (12-6) with 21 points.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego State defeated Hawaii, 83-75, late Thursday night in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Hawaii.

Chana Perry led the Aztecs (14-4, 6-2) with 33 points and 12 rebounds. Perry also made 7 of 7 free throws. Jessica Haynes added 14 points and Brooke Meadows, starting for the first time in five games, added 11. SDSU plays at Hawaii again tonight.

Daisy Mendez made an eight-footer with 1:29 to play to break a 62-62 tie as the U.S. International University women’s basketball team defeated St. Mary’s College, 66-64, in a nonconference game at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.

Amanda Spry made two free throws with 31 seconds left to put USIU ahead by four. St. Mary’s led at halftime, 31-27, but USIU led most of the second half.

Spry led USIU (10-6) with 17 points. Teammate Fiona Murray added 12. Sherry Pappin scored 17 for St. Mary’s.

Cal State San Bernardino defeated UCSD, 62-58, at San Bernardino. Nadirah Scott led UCSD (5-12) with 12 points. Fayori Baldwin had 17 for San Bernardino (14-3).
