SDSU Looks to End 4-Game Losing Streak Against Hawaii in Honolulu

Jim Brandenburg, San Diego State basketball coach, says he is tired of moral victories. He wants a real one against Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference game tonight at 9:35 PST in Honolulu.

“We need a little success,” Brandenburg said. “We’ve got to show something for all our work.”

The Aztecs (7-11, 1-6) have lost four straight games and six of seven since starting WAC play Jan 7. But they are coming off their best game in two weeks, a 57-56 loss to Wyoming Thursday at San Diego.

“That gave us a boost,” Brandenburg said. “But what we really need is a win.”

The loser of this game will occupy last place in the WAC.

The Rainbows (2-16, 1-6) scored their only conference victory against New Mexico two weeks ago. They are coming off a 67-61 loss to Wyoming on Saturday.

Sophomore guard Chris Gaines (15.6 points per game) and junior forward Reggie Cross (14.5) lead the Rainbows in scoring. Cross is the leading rebounder with an 8.2 average.

Tony Ross is leading the Aztecs in scoring with a 15.4 average. Rodney Hawkins leads the team in rebounding (8.0) and is second in scoring (12.9).

SDSU is in the middle of a stretch of playing six of seven road games. The Aztecs, who have lost 18 consecutive road games over three seasons, return from Hawaii to San Diego Tuesday before leaving Friday for a game Saturday against Miami. The two trips will account for 10,500 air miles.

The Aztecs will play at New Mexico Feb. 12 and at Texas El Paso Feb. 13 before returning to the San Diego Sports Arena to play BYU.
