NHL Roundup : Walter Gets Deciding Goal as Canadiens Beat Whalers

Chris Chelios collected a goal and an assist, and Ryan Walter notched the game-winning goal Monday night to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 5-4 victory over the Hartford Whalers at Montreal.

Chelios put Montreal ahead 4-2 at 4:14 of the second period with a 20-foot wrist shot to the right of goalie Mike Liut. The Whalers came back at 16:38 of the period with their third power-play goal of the game. Ray Ferraro snapped a rebound past goalie Patrick Roy, narrowing the margin to 4-3.

Bobby Smith set up Walter in front of Liut to increase the margin to 5-3 at 7:56 of the third. Dave Tippett tipped in Neil Sheehy’s drive from the blue line at 11:58 to cap the scoring.

St. Louis 5, Toronto 4--Doug Gilmour scored at 7:33 of the second period as the Blues won their sixth straight by beating the Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Gilmour’s 21st goal of the season capped a three-goal outburst early in the second that gave the Blues a 5-2 edge. Tim Bothwell’s drive from just inside the blue line ricocheted off the goalpost and onto Gilmour’s stick, giving him a clear 10-foot shot.

Mark Hunter connected on a power play 45 seconds into the second period, tapping in a loose puck in the crease to put the Blues ahead, 3-2. Todd Ewen increased the Blues’ advantage at 7:05--28 seconds before Gilmour’s goal--with his third goal of the season.

Wendel Clark, standing in front of the St. Louis net, tipped Ted Fauss’ shot from the point past a screened Rick Wamsley at 10:48, then scored his 12th goal of the year to cut the Blues’ lead to 5-4 at 16:04.

Boston 5, Chicago 3--Left wing Randy Burridge had two goals and two assists as the Bruins beat the Blackhawks at Chicago.

Burridge hooked up with center Bob Sweeney for a pair of power-play goals 22 seconds apart during a three-goal second-period outburst to key the Bruins’ victory.

The Bruins’ 14th win on the road enabled them to keep pace with first-place Montreal in the Adams Division.

The loss was the third in a row for Chicago, which slipped six points behind second-place St. Louis in the NHL’s Norris Division.

New Jersey 5, Calgary 4--Mark Johnson scored two goals as the Devils beat the Flames at Calgary to extend their winning streak under new Coach Jim Schoenfeld to three games.

The Devils’ first victory in Calgary since Nov. 25, 1982 snapped the Flames’ five-game unbeaten streak.

New Jersey took a 2-0 lead with goals late in the first period from its specialty teams. Kirk Muller scored his 26th goal of the season, on a power play at 15:35. Johnson gave the Devils a 2-0 lead at 18:32, scoring a short-handed goal.

New Jersey outscored the Flames, 2-1, in the middle period to take a 5-2 lead into the third.
