County fire officials reported Tuesday that the vicious storm of Jan. 18-19 caused $5.6 million damage to Orange County.

About $4.4 million worth of the destruction was to public property along the coast, said Hugh Wood, director of the Fire Department’s Special Services Bureau. He said most of that cost is in connection with the collapse of the Huntington Beach Pier’s western end.

The other $1.2 million in damage was to residential properties, mostly near Laguna Beach, Wood said.

Last week, Gov. George Deukmejian declared Orange, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Diego counties disaster areas, Wood said.

He said President Reagan is expected to decide within 10 days whether to designate the same counties a federal disaster area, which would make the owners of the damaged properties eligible for financial relief.
