India urged a high court judge to reject Union Carbide Corp.’s appeal against a lower court order that it pay $270 million in interim relief to Bhopal disaster victims. Attorney General K. Parasaran said the U.S.-based multinational was “totally liable” for the Dec. 3, 1984, gas leak and that the Bhopal District Court was within its legal rights in issuing the interim relief ruling. “It is not a question of (damages) alone, but also the liberty and dignity of the people,” Parasaran told Madhya Pradesh High Court Judge S. K. Seth in Jabalpur, 370 miles southeast of New Delhi.
