Whittier : Store Leaves Quake District
Ames Bookstore has moved to Northern California because of extensive earthquake damage to the store’s three-story building in the Uptown Whittier business district.
Owner Harry Ames and daughter Dolores Slavin moved 200,000 books from Whittier to their new store in Grass Valley, less than 100 miles northeast of Sacramento in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Ames, one of the largest used bookstores in the state, had operated for 20 years in Southern California.
