Local News in Brief : Golf Developer Agrees to Environment Report

Adevelopment company planning a golf course in the Tujunga Wash dropped its opposition Wednesday to a study of whether the project would significantly affect the environment.

Steve Timm, a Cosmo World Corp. official, said last month that a formal environmental-impact report could delay construction for a year. Such a delay could kill the prospect of the course being the host of 1990 Los Angeles Open, he said.

Cosmo World had asked the city Planning Department’s environmental review committee to rule that the golf course would not significantly affect the environment.

But the firm agreed to a full environmental-impact report after the committee, City Councilman Joel Wachs and some community members expressed support for one, said Richard Gervais, a senior city planner.

Timm could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Issues to be addressed in the report include the proposed development’s impact on flooding, water quality, plant life and equestrian trails, Gervais said.

The course is favored by the Sunland-Tujunga Assn. of Residents. Assn. President Sylvia Gross said she doubted the report was necessary. She called the project one of the first “with some class to it that we’ve got in this area.”
