Seattle SuperSonics Coach Bernie Bickerstaff said he has written a letter to National Basketball Assn. Commissioner David Stern accusing Utah Jazz President David Checketts of making remarks that could be construed as “character assassination” to a Seattle player during a game in Utah Monday.

Bickerstaff said that Checketts yelled to Sonic rookie Olden Polynice, who had pleaded guilty to stealing a videocassette recorder while attending the University of Virginia, that he led the league in stealing recorders.

Checketts denied it and Polynice said he didn’t hear the remark. Bickerstaff said he was told about it by a player.

“I won’t stand by and have my players be the subject of character assassinations,” he said.
