NHL Roundup : Pietrangelo Stops North Stars and Gets His First Shutout, 1-0

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been trying to make a deal they probably don’t need to make.

In a bid to get a playoff-caliber goaltender, the Penguins have been trying to pry Andy Moog away from the Edmonton Oilers. Moog, upset with being a backup for the Oilers, is playing with the Canadian Olympic Team. On March 1, he will be ready to return to the National Hockey League.

The way rookie Frank Pietrangelo is tending goal, the Penguins may not need Moog.

Pietrangelo, in just his 13th NHL game, stopped 31 shots Thursday night at Pittsburgh and picked up his first shutout, a 1-0 win over the punchless Minnesota North Stars.

It was the third consecutive game in which Minnesota failed to score. The North Stars have gone almost 234 minutes without a goal.

Pietrangelo is 7-2-0 since the Penguins brought him up from the International League.

Doug Bodger scored the game’s only goal on a power play in the first period. The victory moved the Penguins into second place in the Patrick Division.

Although he was the loser, goalie Don Beaupre stopped Mario Lemieux without a point. Lemieux had scored in 17 consecutive games.

Boston 7, Montreal 3--Cam Neely had a hat trick at Boston to help the Bruins tighten the Adams Division race.

In taking a 3-2 lead in the season series, the Bruins, with a game in hand, moved within three points of the Canadiens.

The Canadiens, who had won three in a row and five out of six, jumped in front, 1-0, on a power-play goal. But the Bruins broke it open with three goals in the second period.

The Bruins, who dominated most of the game, outshot the Canadiens, 41-22.

Quebec 3, New York Rangers 2--Lane Lambert tipped in a shot by defenseman Robert Picard with 6:36 left at Quebec to spoil the return of former coach Michel Bergeron. Bergeron coached in Quebec for seven seasons.

The Nordiques jumped in front, 2-0, but the Rangers tied it on second-period scores by Don Maloney and Norm MacIver.

Philadelphia 6, Toronto 1--The Flyers have come a long way from their poor start and are gradually pulling away in the Patrick Division.

Derrick Smith had two goals and an assist at Philadelphia as the Flyers gained an easy victory over the slumping Maple Leafs.
