Griffith-Joyner Ranked 2nd in World for 200 Meters

Florence Griffith-Joyner of Van Nuys, the 200-meter silver medalist at last year’s World Championships in Rome, has been ranked second in Track and Field News’ 1987 world rankings.

Griffith-Joyner, 28, had her finest season in ‘87, running personal bests of 21.96 seconds in the 200 meters and 10.96 in the 100, where she ranked seventh in the U. S.

Griffith-Joyner also ran the third leg on the gold medal-winning 400-meter relay in Rome.

She ranks third on the all-time U. S. performer list in both the 100 and 200 and ninth on the all-time world performer list in the 200.

In addition to Griffith-Joyner, Alice Brown of Panorama City and Denean Howard of Sylmar were nationally ranked in the 100 and 400 meters, respectively.

Brown, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist, ranked fourth in the United States in the 100 (11.01 best) and also ran the first leg on the world championship 400 relay.

Howard, a 1982 graduate of Kennedy High, ranked fourth in the 400 (50.72 best) and ran the second leg on the bronze medal-winning U. S. 1,600-meter relay team at the World Championships.

Regina Jacobs, a 1981 graduate of the Argyll Academy in North Hollywood (now Campbell Hall High), ranked third in the United States at 1,500 meters. She won the 1987 TAC title and has a best of 4:02.6.
