Bush-Rather Tiff
Rosenberg’s assessment of the Vice President George Bush-Dan Rather-CBS incident was eminently fair.
With Bush a leading presidential candidate, suddenly the office of vice president is regarded as “powerful,” and inquiring minds demand to know just what indeed Bush had to do with the Iran-Contra decisions.
Well, according to every comedian in town for the last 30 or 40 years, the office of V.P. has no influence on anything or anybody, and to my knowledge (until Rather), that has been the reality and the perception.
Other than an effort to polish off another Republican, what was the point of the dogged pursuit for an answer? We have been Iran-Contra-ed nearly to death for a year now, and if Bush had had any real power, that hostile congressional committee would surely have ferreted it out.
Rather is a little puffed-up with self-importance.
