Four Sockers, Zungul on Decade Team : Segota, Veee, Toth, Clavijo Named; Cooper Tops Newman as Coach

Sockers Branko Segota, Juli Veee, Zoltan Toth and Fernando Clavijo and former Socker Steve Zungul were named to the Major Indoor Soccer League 10-player team of the decade, which was announced Friday.

The team includes Zungul and Stan Stamenkovic of the Baltimore Blast at forward; Segota, Veee and Kai Haaskivi of the Cleveland Force at midfield; Clavijo, Kim Roentved of the Kansas City Comets and Mike Stankovic of the Wichita Wings as defenders, and Toth and Slobo Ilijevski of the St. Louis Steamers in goal.

Baltimore Blast Coach Kenny Cooper, the winningest coach in MISL history (254-167, .640 winning percentage) was selected as the coach over the Sockers’ Ron Newman (153-71, .683).

The selection committee included Bill Kentling, MISL commissioner; Mitch Burke, assistant commissioner; James Budish, operations director; Cooper; Roy Turner, Wichita president; Bart Wolstein, Cleveland owner; Joseph Garofolo, Cleveland general manager; Tim Leiweke, former Kansas City president; referee Gino Dippolito, and players Keith Van Eron and Dave MacKenzie of Baltimore and Doc Lawson of Dallas. Cooper, Van Eron, MacKenzie and Lawson did not vote for themselves.

Candidates for the team had to have more than four years of playing or coaching in the MISL. Zungul received the most votes with 105, followed by Roentved with 98 and Ilijevski with 90. Voting was done on a 10-7-5-3-1 basis; Zungul received 10 first-place votes.
