Politics 88 : CAMPAIGN ’88 : Simon, Jackson Backed by Iowa Peace Group

Sen. Paul Simon of Illinois and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Democratic candidates for President, were endorsed Saturday by one of the leading peace organizations in Iowa, STAR-PAC.

The group said it chose Simon because he has “a proven record with a crystal-clear commitment to end the arms race.”

“He led the fight first against the MX missile, and he has consistently voted in Congress against the MX, chemical weapons, the neutron bomb, the B-1 bomber and nuclear-powered aircraft carriers,” it said.

The group said that Jackson is a candidate who “understands the critical relationship between peace and economic justice. STAR-PAC’s studies find Jackson to be faultless on peace issues. He would reverse the arms race, negotiate mutual troop reductions in Europe, provide a comprehensive plan for the Middle East . . . and promote self-determination and economic justice in the Third World.”

The group’s endorsement of the two candidates was a boost for them in advance of Monday night’s precinct caucuses because peace activists generally make up a significant portion of the caucus participants.
