Afghan President Najibullah told U.N. mediator Diego Cordovez that his government will be flexible in search of an Afghan peace settlement, official Kabul Radio reported. Cordovez flew to the Afghan capital for a day of talks with the Soviet-backed government. The trip was Cordovez’s third to Kabul since arriving in the region Jan. 20; he has been conducting indirect talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Geneva since 1982. Earlier, the chairman of the main Afghan rebel alliance, Yunis Khalis, told Cordovez the rebels consider the Geneva talks “useless.”
