Rupert Murdoch today said he would shut down the New York Post in 11 days unless Post workers agree to a 12% salary cut and other concessions that would enable him to sell the newspaper, a union leader said.

In a meeting with Post unions, Murdoch, who agreed over the weekend to sell the newspaper to real-estate developer Peter S. Kalikow, also called for a reduction of 77 jobs among the paper’s 1,200 employees, according to Jerry Cronin, president of the mail handler’s union. Kalikow, 45, has agreed to pay $37 million for the Post and its assets, including the valuable waterfront property it occupies in lower Manhattan.
