United Mine Workers members overwhelmingly backed a five-year contract that provides small wage increases and greater job opportunities for laid-off miners, union officials said. Officials said that with two-thirds of the eligible local unions reporting, the membership had accepted the agreement by more than a 2-1 margin. Among the job security provisions is a stipulation that if a coal operator who signs the contract decides to lease out operations, all jobs will go to UMW members laid off from that company.
