U.S. Rejects Panamanian Pullout Call

WASHINGTON —
The White House today flatly rejected Panamanian military leader Manuel Noriega’s demand that the United States end its military presence in the country.
“Under the Panama Canal treaties, we have every right to be there and we don’t anticipate any change in that status,” spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said at his daily news briefing.
Fitzwater was responding to Noriega’s call for the removal of the U.S. Southern Command, Washington’s regional military headquarters.
