Stephen G. Hults, 32, who directed several critically acclaimed plays in Minneapolis and St. Paul and then became a successful New York director. Hults became interested in the theater as a student when his English teacher suggested he recite Shakespeare to improve his diction. He graduated with a drama degree from Hofstra University in 1976 and got his master’s degree at the University of Minnesota. While in Minnesota, Hults directed plays at the Theater in the Round, the Guthrie and other local theaters. He returned to New York in 1979 and became company manager for the national touring company of “Sweeney Todd” starring Angela Lansbury. Most recently he directed a production of Shakespeare’s “Pericles” in New York and produced the Rodgers and Hart musical “Too Many Girls” at the Equity Library Theater. In New York City on Jan. 29 of complications from AIDS.
