While his teammates were idle, Pepperdine’s Andrew Sznadjer, ranked second nationally in tennis, won the singles title in the National Indoor Tournament, defeating No. 5 Shelby Cannon of Tennessee in the championship match, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. The first-set loss to Cannon was the only set that Sznadjer lost in the tournament.

The Waves (3-0) will entertain Georgia Tech at 1:30 p.m. Sunday and Arizona State at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Malibu.

The No. 9 UCLA women’s swim team defeated No. 8 USC, 182-86, last week. The Bruins were paced by the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Jeanette Beitz, Jenny Susser, Kim Rosso and Sheri Smith, who qualified for the NCAA meet by winning in 3:26.67.

UCLA senior outfielder Jeff Osborn has had a hot bat in the early going. In the Bruins’ opener, a 12-5 win over UC Santa Barbara, Osborn was 5 for 6 with 6 runs batted in. He hit a home run in an 11-6 defeat of the University of San Diego and homered again in a 12-3 defeat of U. S. International.

The Bruins, 4-1, will play host to UC Irvine at 2 p.m. Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium at Veterans Administration in West Los Angeles.
