A practice bomb fell from a Marine jet into a residential neighborhood, landing in a street where it embedded harmlessly in the pavement, Air Force officials said.

Residents of the neighborhood said they heard a loud crackling sound when the 2 1/2-foot by 4-inch bomb fell Wednesday afternoon from a Marine AV8B Harrier fighter jet on training maneuvers from Nellis Air Force Base.

“It was a very unusual occurrence,” said Capt. Barry Anderson, an Air Force spokesman. “This is not something that would happen frequently.”
