THE COLLEGES : College Basketball : Fullerton Women Defeat Fresno State

Amy Torczon scored 18 points to lead the Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball team to an 80-73 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory over Fresno State Thursday night in Titan Gym.

Fullerton saw the Bulldogs rally from a 36-32 halftime deficit to tie the score at 38-38 on a Leesa Agent jump shot. The Titans then built an 11-point lead, 59-48, with 10:19 remaining. Fresno State closed to within three, 67-64, with 4:15 left, but Torczon came back to hit an 11-foot jumper to give the Titans a 69-64 lead.

The Titans (13-8 overall, 8-4 in the PCAA) had balanced scoring, with four players in double figures. Former El Dorado High School star Jill Matyuch came off the bench to hit four three-point field goals and score 14 points. Senior forward Cathi Hall added 12 points and Felicia Benson 10.

Torczon had a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Bulldogs (10-10, 5-6) were led by Agent and Yvette Roberts, who both scored 17 points. Laurie Heinrichs scored 16 points.

In another Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game:

Cal State Long Beach 101, UC Irvine 41--Penny Toler scored 22 points, and the 14th-ranked 49ers beat UC Irvine at Long Beach. Long Beach (13-5, 10-0) led, 20-19, with 10:11 left in the first half but scored the next 29 points and held the Anteaters (8-12, 6-6) scoreless for 9 1/2 minutes.

Shannon Smith added 15 points and Carol Brandt had 9 points and 11 rebounds for Long Beach. Cheryl Eiland scored 19 points for Irvine.

In a nonconference men’s game:

Southern California College 98, The Master’s 84--Todd Dixon scored 23 points and Jim Mansfield 16 to lead the Vanguards (12-12) at Costa Mesa. The Master’s cut the SCC lead to 78-73 with 3:58 left but couldn’t get closer. Kevin Alexander added 10 points for SCC. Kenny Smith scored 24 for The Master’s (6-20).
