Mal Adroit

In her Outtakes item on Roman Polanski’s new movie “Frantic” (Feb. 7), Pat H. Broeske writes: “There’s something called d’roit auteur (rights of the author) embedded in French law, which allows the artist to protect his/her work.”

It certainly isn’t called that by anyone speaking French.

The phrase would have to be droit (or perhaps the plural droits ) d’auteur . Maybe your writer had in mind Tom Wolf, noted auteur of “ D-Roit Stuff.”

Broeske says she learned all her French from Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther film series.
