Three Southern California architectural firms have been selected as finalists in a competition to design a $10-million theater and cultural complex for the Torrance Civic Center.

The three firms, Anthony & Langford of Huntington Beach, The Blurock Partnership of Newport Beach and Liebhardt, Weston & Associates of La Jolla, were chosen after a city committee reviewed proposals from a field of 17. Torrance fired its longtime architect last year when bids for the complex exceeded estimates by more than 50%.

The Torrance City Council will select an architect after visiting other cultural complexes designed by the finalists in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and the Palm Springs area.

The complex will feature a 500-seat theater, meeting rooms, art, crafts and design studios, dance and exercise rooms and offices. An outdoor plaza, amphitheater and Japanese gardens will also be built.
