The nation’s first nuclear weapons test of the year is scheduled for Monday at the Nevada Test Site. Code-named “Kernville,” the test is set for 8 a.m. beneath Pahute Mesa, a remote, 7,000-foot plateau deep within the boundaries of the site, about 105 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The test comes less than a month after U.S. scientists met with their Soviet counterparts to discuss verification techniques that both sides said could lead to negotiation of a nuclear test ban treaty. The Department of Energy has declined to reveal the purpose of the test other than to say that it is “weapons related.”
