Players Ties 3rd-Quarter Loss to Marketing Costs

Players International said it lost $133,800, or 2 cents a share, in the third quarter ended Dec. 31, about the same as it lost in the year-earlier quarter.

The Calabasas company attributed the loss to marketing costs to attract members for its Players Club. For $125, Players offers members of the club discounts on hotels, meals and shows at gaming resorts in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, N. J.

The company’s revenue rose 61%, to $1.9 million from $1.2 million in the year-earlier period. The company lost $134,300, or 2 cents a share, in the third quarter a year ago.

For the nine months, Players narrowed its loss to $75,700, or 1 cent a share, from $547,000, or 8 cents a share. Revenue climbed 87%, to $5.6 million.
