Retail Sales in County : Some Smaller Cities Attract Many Buyers

Share

A city’s size doesn’t always matter when it comes to retail spending. For instance, Costa Mesa is only the seventh largest city in the county. But it also is the home of megamall South Coast Plaza, which helped push the community to the No. 3 ranking among county cities in taxable retail sales during the second quarter of 1987, according to the State Board of Equalization. And Irvine, which has the Irvine Auto Center, was No. 4. Not surprisingly, the county’s two largest cities, Anaheim and Santa Ana, were ranked first and second in taxable sales for the quarter. The retail data tracks sales in apparel, general merchandise, restaurants, food and liquor stores, service stations, car dealers and auto supplies.
