Local News in Brief : Girl, 5, Gets Heart Valve

Share

A 5-year old girl once known as the “miracle baby” after she received an artificial heart valve when she was just 5 months old received a new, larger heart valve at Childrens Hospital in Hollywood on Monday.

Cherie Crane, daughter of Patty and Stephen Crane of North Hollywood, was in critical but stable condition after the seven-hour surgery Monday, hospital spokeswoman Susan Reeder said.

She said that doctors removed an obstruction from below the aortic valve and then replaced the small prosthesis, implanted when her heart was just the size of a walnut, with a larger valve. She was born with a defect in which her heart had not developed beyond that of a 30-day-old embryo, doctors reported at the time of the initial surgery.
