Although its authenticity is somewhat in doubt, what sellers billed as a possible Vincent Van Gogh oil painting was sold at auction in the Hague, the Netherlands, on Monday for $5,000, down from its opening bid of $25,000. The 9-inch-by-7-inch painting was bought by an anonymous Dutchman, auction organizers said. The price it fetched contrasted sharply with the $53.9 million paid for Van Gogh’s “Irises” in a New York auction in November.
