Whittier : More Quake Relief Funds
The Whittier City Council has voted to transfer an additional $93,000 to the Earthquake Relief Fund that makes grants to merchants recovering from the Oct. 1 earthquake.
The council decided last year that public and private donations to the $361,000 fund would only benefit the business community, and city staff members have since made more than $100,000 in grants to merchants.
But there is not enough money to fund the more than 100 grant requests from business owners, so the council voted to transfer $93,000 in reserve funds of the Public Safety Department. The maximum grant is $5,000.
