Local News in Brief : Woman Killed by Train

A 69-year-old woman was killed Wednesday when her car was struck by an Amtrak train as she drove through a Burbank railroad crossing where warning lights were flashing but the crossing gates had not come down, police said.

No one was injured on the westbound passenger train in the 10:44 a.m. accident on Buena Vista Street near Vanowen Street, police said. The car’s driver, who lived in Burbank, was dead at the scene. Her name was not disclosed, pending notification of her family.

Police said the woman was driving a station wagon north on Buena Vista when she attempted to cross the tracks and was hit by the train, which was going 40 to 45 m.p.h. According to police, witnesses said red lights were flashing at the crossing but automatic safety gates did not come down. The accident is under investigation.
