Senators Plan Primary Visits to Aid Dole

Ten Republican senators supporting Sen. Bob Dole’s presidential campaign said today they will fan out to the “Super Tuesday” states and provide voters with a “clear and unequivocal picture” of his record on taxes and other issues.

Several charged that Dole’s record was “distorted” in the final days before Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary but none attacked Vice President George Bush, who put on a media blitz accusing Dole of straddling the issue of raising taxes and supporting an oil import fee.

“We are not out to attack anyone,” said Sen. Warren B. Rudman, Dole’s New Hampshire campaign manager.

The senators said at a news conference that Dole was aware of but did not initiate their plan.

Rudman said that on the plane returning from New Hampshire, he told Dole--who lost the primary to Bush--that “it was extremely important on Super Tuesday his record is clear, unambiguous and without distortion” and he wanted to put Senate backers on the road.

The other senators involved are Pete V. Domenici of New Mexico, Nancy Landon Kassebaum of Kansas, Alfonse D’Amato of New York, Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, Steven D. Symms of Idaho, Frank H. Murkowski of Alaska, Don Nickles of Oklahoma, Paul S. Trible Jr. of Virginia and Robert T. Stafford of Vermont.
