WCAC Roundup : St. Mary’s Defeats USF for Its Seventh Straight Victory

Robert Haugen scored 23 points to lead St. Mary’s to its seventh victory, a 58-48 win over the University of San Francisco Friday night in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at USF.

St. Mary’s (8-3 in the WCAC, 17-6 overall) moved into a tie for second place in the conference with Pepperdine, which plays first-place Loyola Marymount tonight.

USF (3-8, 11-13) lost its eighth straight game.

The Dons led, 39-38, with 8:13 remaining when Rodney Tention was called for technical foul. Haugen converted the free throw, and Mel Lewis hit a shot from the corner from the corner to give St. Mary’s a lead at 41-39 that it never relinquished.

Santa Clara 56, San Diego 40--Jens Gordon scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds to lead the Broncos to victory on their home court.

Santa Clara (7-4, 16-8) shot 43% from the field, but managed to make 20 of 23 free throws.

San Diego (2-9, 10-14) shot just 21% from the field. Efrem Leonard led the Toreros with nine points.
