Update on the Proposal . . . She Said ‘Yes’
An intimate brunch served on fine china and crystal on a Corona del Mar bluff overlooking the ocean. Served by waiters attired in tuxedo shirts and shorts. Then a romantic drive to San Pedro to catch a helicopter scheduled to fly over a giant banner spread on Cabrillo Beach proclaiming “Marry me, Nancy.”
And finally, a weekend trip to Catalina Island to celebrate Nancy’s presumably affirmative decision.
That Was Scenario
That was the scenario, reported here last Saturday, that 27-year-old IBM hardware broker Ron Lerma had arranged for his Feb. 13 marriage proposal to 26-year-old Nancy Adams, a business consultant.
And according to Lerma, the elaborate stunt was effective. Adams indeed said yes--after she stopped crying.
“She had no clue about what was going on . . . when we flew over the banner, she didn’t know what to do. She started crying. Then I asked her to marry me in the helicopter,” Lerma said.
“I was so surprised,” Adams affirmed. “I thought when we went to brunch at the beach that it was a Valentine’s brunch.”
When the couple then flew to Catalina, Lerma recalled, “I said, ‘Let’s buy a newspaper and read what’s going on today.’ She could not believe it that The Times actually got hold of this (information about the proposal plans).”
A Traditional Type
“When I saw the paper I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, my dad’s already read it.’ I could just see him spitting coffee across the room,” Adams said, adding that her father is a traditionalist who would have preferred to have been asked for his approval before Lerma proposed. (To set things straight, Lerma called and asked for the approval of his soon-to-be-father-in-law from Catalina.)
Now that the wedding of the Huntington Beach couple is set for the early part of June, can the world expect any further displays of such romantically crazed devotion?
“Well, we’re planning to get married in Bakersfield and go to Switzerland for the honeymoon,” Lerma said. “That’s pretty exotic.”
As for the gentleman scheduled to propose marriage last Sunday on the scoreboard at the L.A. Clippers vs. Dallas Mavericks game, a Clippers spokesman reports the man’s girlfriend responded affirmatively, but there are no more details.
