Paramilitary gendarmes in Bayonne, France, captured the elusive suspected leader of France’s small Basque separatist guerrilla group, Iparretarrak, in an ambush that netted four other suspects. Philippe Bidart, wanted for the murders of two riot police and two paramilitary gendarmes and described as France’s most wanted man, was captured after a shoot-out following several days of surveillance of a suburban house. Iparretarrak, which means “Those of the North,” has been largely cold-shouldered by Spain’s ETA Basque separatists.
