A state appeals court in San Francisco ruled a Berkeley police officer who hurt his knee in a lunchtime basketball game is eligible for workers’ compensation, but an electronics technician who suffered a similar injury cannot collect any money from the state. The 1st District Court of Appeal said Berkeley Policeman James A. Taylor should be granted compensation because his job requires him to stay in good physical shape, but there was no such requirement for David E. Todd, the electronics engineer who injured his knee in a lunchtime basketball game in 1986.
