Engineers Fete Man of Year, Best Projects
Albert A. Dorman, president and chairman of Ashland Technology Corp., Los Angeles, has been named Engineer of the Year by the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering.
He will receive the institute’s George Washington Award at Friday’s Honors and Awards Banquet at the Almansor Court restaurant in Alhambra.
Dorman also serves as chairman of three of Ashland Technology’s seven subsidiary firms, including Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall, Los Angeles.
The banquet culminates National Engineers Week celebrations, sponsored in the Southland by the institute.
Washington’s Birthday
The activities are held annually the week of George Washington’s birthday. Washington, a land surveyor, also established the nation’s first engineering school.
Three projects will receive Engineering Project Achievement awards: The Endicott Facilities Project on Alaska’s North Slope, designed by Ralph M. Parsons Co. of Pasadena for Standard Oil; the Department of Water and Power’s Los Angeles Aqueduct Filtration Plant in Sylmar, and the Mammoth Geothermal Power Plant at Casa Diablo Hot Springs near Mammoth Lakes, designed by the Ben Holt Co., Pasadena. George J. Hallinan, a vice president of the Rocketdyne Division of the Rockwell International Corp., and James A. Caywood, president of DeLeuw, Cather & Co., Washington, will receive Distinguished Engineering Merit awards.
Robert Kennard, president of Kennard Design Group, Los Angeles; Robert H. Liebeck of Douglas Aircraft Co., and William C. Stookey, chairman of Willdan Associates, Anaheim, will receive Outstanding Engineering Merit awards.
Educator Award
Michael A. Melkanoff, director of UCLA’s Manufacturing Engineering Program and CAD/CAM Laboratory, will receive the Distinguished Engineering Educator Award.
Joel E. Kitchens, project manager/engineer with Bechtel Western Power Co., will receive the Outstanding Engineering Service Award, while Patrick C. G. Coulter of the Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International, will receive the Distinguished Industrial Technology Communications Award.
The Frank E. Reeves International Interprofessional Memorial Award will be presented to Edward G. Linhart, president and chairman of Western Gear Corp.
Honorary awards will go to Assemblywoman Marian W. LaFollette (R-Northridge), the Distinguished Legislative Achievements Award; Rep. Glenn M. Anderson (D-Harbor City), the Distinguished Congressional Achievements Award, and Los Angeles Fire Commission member Ann Reiss Lane, the Distinguished Community Service Merit Award.
Engineers Week activities began Friday with the College of Fellows installation luncheon. Michael Klein, manager of NASA’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Project, will address a noon meeting Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
Thursday’s activities will feature a program for 500 high school students by Jean-Paul Revel of Caltech entitled, “ALL-US in Wonderland.”
