San Diego Sports Et Cetera : Northridge Dusted Off by SDSU, 13-1

Freshman catcher Eric Christopherson had three hits and drove in three runs to lead San Diego State to a 13-1 nonconference college baseball victory over Cal State Northridge Sunday at Smith Field.

Christopherson and Lance Pinnell both hit two-run singles during an eight-run rally in the eighth inning. In that inning, San Diego State (7-4) had nine singles.

Other Aztecs joining the hit parade were Harry Henderson, who was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and Steve Montejano, who was 4 for 5.

John Hemmerly struck out five in 5 innings to even his record at 1-1 for SDSU. The Aztecs play at the University of San Diego at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Sonya Carter had 24 points and 9 rebounds for U.S. International in an 85-64 win over Oral Roberts at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.

USIU (15-6) got off to an early lead and never trailed. The Gulls led, 42-27, at the half.

Daisy Mendes (18) and Fiona Murray (14) also scored in double figures for USIU.

Vivian Herron had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Oral Roberts.

HOCKEY

Tony Couture had 23 saves as U.S. International extended its winning streak to six games with a 3-1 victory over Air Force at the San Diego Ice Arena. Jim Hau and Mike Racz scored first-period goals for USIU (21-13). Kurt Rohloff scored for Air Force to make it 2-1 in the second period, but Dewey Wahlin answered for USIU. Air Force is 14-13.
