RANKING OF COUNTY SHOPPING CENTERS IN 1987 SECOND QUARTER : No. 1 Is No Surprise, But There’s New Runner-Up

The latest shopping mall sales figures tell a familiar story: For the second quarter of 1987, South Coast Plaza showed both the highest volume and percentage growth of the 14 major Orange County malls. Sales at South Coast increased 27% over the second quarter of ‘86, from $106 million to $135 million, according to figures compiled for the Los Angeles Times Marketing Research Department. Maura Eggan, marketing director for South Coast Plaza, said the gains were the result of a combination of new store openings and increased sales at most existing retailers. Brea Mall sales increased 9.5% to $44 million, moving the mall into a distant second-place finish, up from fourth place the previous year. The Huntington Center’s sales jumped 25%, moving that mall from ninth to seventh place with $29 million in sales. Several other shopping centers fared less well: Five out of the 14 malls saw sales decline from the second quarter in ‘86, including Fashion Island/Newport Center, which dropped from second to third place. Main Place/Santa Ana underwent extensive remodeling, during which time much of the shopping plaza was closed, accounting for that mall’s 26% decline in sales, market researcher Lucille Sullivan said.
