A 24-hour transport strike called by leftist Salvadoran guerrillas virtually halted bus and truck traffic nationwide and drastically curtailed use of automobiles. The strike was called by members of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front to protest legislative and municipal elections scheduled for March 20. The rebels say the elections are a farce. In San Salvador, the capital city with 455,000 people, only pickup trucks and some private cars could be seen on the streets. Hundreds of police and troops patrolled streets and highways to defend against rebel attacks, and thousands of parents kept their children out of school.
