Plans for 489 major new business projects were announced in 1987 in California, an increase of 9% over 1986, the state Department of Commerce said. However, because of corporate efforts to keep costs down, the new projects will result in about 126,200 new jobs, down from the 159,000 expected from the 448 projects announced in 1986. The list of projects, valued at $3.5 billion, was topped by San Diego, with 47 projects announced, a 114% increase from 1986. The survey included only companies investing at least $500,000, employing at least 50 people or whose facility will be at least 10,000 square feet.
