Bellflower : Apartment Project Delayed
The Bellflower City Council delayed action on several variances for a proposed senior housing project after Councilman Ken Cleveland announced a possible conflict of interest because he owns property nearby.
The proposed 51-unit apartment complex, 9919 Ramona St., is about 175 feet from a parcel of commercial property on Artesia Boulevard that Cleveland owns, the councilman said.
After City Atty. Maurice O’Shea on Monday told him he would be participating “at his own risk,” the council voted to continue the matter until March 28. “I don’t feel I have a conflict, but I wanted to clarify it,” Cleveland said. O’Shea said he has written to the Fair Political Practices Commission this week for a determination.
The project, which is proposed by developer Virginia Boggs, has drawn criticism from nearby residents who oppose having a four-story building in a neighborhood of single-family homes. The city has received a petition signed by 402 residents opposing the project and another signed by about 246 in favor of it, Planning Director Lee Whitenberg said.
